ALS and the Texas Compassionate Use Program
Added to TX CUP: 2021
We’ll Keep This Short
If you or someone you love has ALS, your time is being asked of by too many systems already. We’ve tried to make this page direct.
ALS Under the Texas CUP
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a qualifying condition under the Texas Compassionate Use Program. A CURT-registered Texas physician can certify you for low-THC product access.
What the CUP Authorizes
Low-THC products only. Texas does not permit the high-THC formulations available in recreational-legal states.
Coordinating With Your ALS Care Team
ALS care is multidisciplinary — neurologist, pulmonologist, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech, often hospice in later stages. Your ALS team should know about CUP enrollment.
How the Evaluation Can Adapt to You
For ALS patients with communication limitations or mobility limitations, we adapt the evaluation:
- Caregivers / spouses / adult children can participate with patient consent
- Voice banking devices, assistive communication tools, written communication during the visit are all welcome
- Intake forms can be completed by a caregiver with patient confirmation
- If video visits are not workable, talk to us about alternative formats
What to Bring
- ALS diagnosis documentation
- Current medication list
- ALS care team contact info (neurologist, primary care, hospice if applicable)
- TX ID (patient + caregiver if caregiver is participating)
Terminal-Illness Overlap
If the treating team has indicated a terminal prognosis, see also Terminal Illness — there may be intake adjustments specific to end-of-life care.
