Autism and the Texas Compassionate Use Program
Added to TX CUP: 2021
A Note Before You Read Further
Autism is a wide spectrum of neurodevelopmental presentations. What works clinically for one autistic patient may not be relevant for another. This page covers the CUP pathway in general; the specifics get worked out in the evaluation.
Autism Under the Texas CUP
Autism is a qualifying condition under the Texas Compassionate Use Program. A CURT-registered Texas physician can evaluate fit and, if appropriate, register the patient in CURT.
What the CUP Authorizes for Autistic Patients
Low-THC products only. For autistic patients (adult and pediatric), the clinical conversation often centers on co-occurring conditions: anxiety, sleep disruption, sensory regulation, self-injurious behavior in some presentations.
Coordinating With Existing Care
If the patient (adult or child) has an existing developmental pediatrician, neurologist, psychiatrist, behavioral therapist, ABA team, or other provider, that team should know about CUP enrollment.
How Adult vs. Pediatric Evaluations Differ
Adult Autistic Patients
The evaluation proceeds like any other CUP evaluation — the patient consents, the patient provides history. Communication accommodations (written, AAC, longer visit time) are available on request.
Pediatric Autistic Patients
Pediatric evaluations require the parent or legal guardian. The evaluation is structured around the child’s diagnosis, current treatment plan, and the family’s specific concerns. Pediatric CUP enrollment for autism is a meaningful decision that should not be made hastily — the evaluation is a careful conversation.
What to Bring
- Autism diagnosis documentation (developmental pediatrician note, neuropsychological evaluation, etc.)
- Current treatment plan summary
- Current medication list
- Provider contact info (developmental pediatrician, behavioral team, etc.)
- TX ID (patient + caregiver if pediatric)
What the Visit Itself Looks Like
Video format. Length varies — 20 minutes for an established adult patient with clear documentation, 30–45 minutes for pediatric or complex presentations. The physician is not in a hurry.
